Your USB cable may not be identifying itself properly to the device as a USB connection. I know some combo USB/Serial cables to do this. When this happens, the debug console on the device isn't able to open the connection on the proper port.


Also, what version of Palm Desktop are you using? I'd recommend 4.1 to have the proper USB drivers for a stable debug connection.
