You need to set the field to usable but not editable. The user can still
select text (i.e. to copy and paste), but they can't edit the field.

I believe (haven't done this for a while) that you may need to set the
field to editable for the duration of your calls to update it... then
set it back to non-editable once you're done. Can't recall for sure
though...
