It may be due to OS updates. Hotsync will automatically download any OS
updates to the unit after a reset.  These all require a reset after
installing.

No.  Hard reset, sync, rename, finish sync, reset device seems to be the
only option when an OS update is available.  If you were to alter the
Hotsync name without wiping out the unit's memory the OS update should
remain and then not require a reset.  Just make sure if you go this route,
you're not doing it with the intention of circumventing someone's software
licensing.
