Thanks for the summary; I did actually read your posting.
It seemed to me that the O.P.'s "it would make a section of code I'm
writing *much* simpler" comment suggested that he was well aware that he
could store his flag somewhere else (necessitating some form of lookup)
in various ways, and IMHO a response merely telling him to do just that
could be construed as condescending or something... :-)
<shrug> I thought the original question was kind of interesting, y'see.
He didn't actually tell us what these files are. If they're a bunch of
internal files that only his application accesses, perhaps he can (ab)use
one of the existing attributes for his nefarious purposes, or even encode
the bit into judicious filename modifications. But probably these files
are user-visible or used by other applications, and these tricks would
have undesired side-effects.
