You didn't tell us what OS release levels you are testing it on. I believe the OS did not recognize taps beyond the first line in a table row until 4.0. Try your program on 4.0+ and see if it acts the way you expect. If you need to support the same user experience prior to 4.0, you have to trap the pen down event yourself, AFAIK.
