By any chance, are the file systems used for removable media by the Palm OS and PocketPC compatible? I don't mean the APIs of course, I just mean that assuming I have an SD card with a bunch of files arranged in directories, can I get a Palm app and a PocketPC app both to navigate these directories and see the files?

yep.

its FAT16 - pretty standardized :)
But of course, there exist some bugs in the FAT16 os drivers, e.g. if you format a specific SD card on pocket pc, you can't access that on palm (due the different cluster size?)

we currently have a solution in place that will allow us to have a single MMC/SD card and have it auto start/load applications depending
on the device it is inserted into (Palm, PocketPC, Symbian, Smartphone)
its nasty - but, it works.
We have also such a solution, but for Symbian OS 7.0 (e.g. Sony p800), the root directory is only accessible under \MSSEMC\P-Series, e.g. you can't access \DCIM
