The wisdom of others. A good technical book doesn't just rehash the API reference. The author adds tips and tricks that reduce the learning curve. It should introduce the reader to the quirks of the target system and provide some of the common resolutions. I've been programming for the Palm OS since '97 and still refer to several books outside of the API reference. Most good programmers/SW Engineers refer to outside resources during a project.
