Find the smallest safe application you can (one you'll never use), install it, and then use a utility such as FileZ or RsrcEdit to change the creator ID and name. Starter.prc is a good candidate. HotPaw PrefViewer can create a dummy application with the creator ID of an orphaned preference; so you might be able to use the resultant dummy application that as well.
