The problem is at least two-fold.
$ host news.palmos.com
news.palmos.com has address 216.91.57.210
news.palmos.com is an alias for palm.lyris.net.
palm.lyris.net has address 64.62.197.105
The 216.x.y.z address refuses NNTP connections, but the 64.x.y.z one
does have a news server on it. So you can connect directly to either
palm.lyris.net or that IP number until the DNS records get sorted out.
But once you connect to it, you may find that you cannot authenticate
yourself. The news server now replies to AUTHINFO USER with 281 ("go
ahead") when it really means 381 ("password required too"). This is
a violation of RFC 2980, and is a serious bug in Lyris. It will prevent
any correctly written NNTP client from being able to authenticate itself
via the original authinfo method.
If you can select a different authentication method and Lyris understands
it, then you may be able to get on. Otherwise we're all screwed until
Lyris fixes this bug or we kludge our clients.
This is not the only new bug in the news server since the weekend's
upgrade. It also replies to the STAT command with 220 instead of 223,
which is a violation of RFC 977. On the other hand, RFC 977's "current
article pointer" now finally works in Lyris, so I'll be sending a lot
fewer STAT commands.
I'm getting pretty tired of rewriting my scripts to work around Lyris's
bugs :-(. The amount of money PalmSource has donated to the Lyris
corporation by now could have bought Amy an awful lot of INN training!
