Updating a field without first completely erasing it sometimes did this on earlier versions of the OS. Try erasing the area behind the field after updating the text pointer then redraw the field. Also make sure the text pointer is pointing to the correct data. There is also a bug in the OS that causes resources to periodically display incorrect text but from what I understood, it mostly happened with buttons. i.e. a button displaying 'Yes' might show 'Yks'
