Most of the compiler optimizations in the "optimize for speed" aren't very useful in 68K code, since the processor doesn't have any pipelining or cache. There are some loop transformations that will do good things, but a lot of the work in scheduling or rearranging code doesn't gain your performance until you're on much more powerful processors.
