The user name doesn't provide very good protection against duplication: two 
different users of the application could easily have a user name of 
"Tom".  What our company has done doesn't provide absolute protection 
either, but it's better than the user name: the current system time in 
ticks.  We actually just convert the values returned by TimGetSeconds and 
TimGetTicks into strings and concatenate them.  If you look at the 
definitions of these two functions, you'll see that accidental duplication 
of this value by different users is very unlikely.  Of course, we only use 
this value as a fallback if there's no ROM serial number to use.  Either 
way, we capture the chosen identifier just once and store it in the 
Preferences database.
