A supplementary remark: I did some search on the web and got the impression that the low VFS performance might have HW reasons. If it is really so, then we don't have other option, but to accept it. Any thoughts?
It's quite likely. While SD can support up to 4-bit wide access, many PDAs only have 1-bit wide busses. I saw that the SD slot on the Zire 71 was much faster than than on my Tungsten C when I was testing Kinoma playback. The Zire 71 actually played back a movie at a higher FPS rate than the T|C when streaming from the card, while the T|C smoked the Zire 71 when playing from memory.
