Because people don't know how to use email.

(which is then gated to nntp by the lyris system used by Palm).

People seem to "recycle" a message in an existing thread, by
hitting "Reply" on that message, then removing the Subject and Body, and
replacing it with their own new Subject and Body, and send that along.

Of course, the Message-Id that follows the message (which is what
many MUAs use to determine threading or not), happily puts that "reply"
inside the thread it originally came from. Others reply to THAT reply, and
now you have what appears to be disjointed messages inside other threads.

It happens all the time. That's what macros and addressbooks in a
MUA are for. Don't recycle existing messages to create "New" messages by
hitting "Reply". If you want to compose a new message, select "New" in
your mailer.
