You're a mad man :-)

True. Why would anyone use plain vi when VIM is around? :-P

Anyway. The great benefit of using cygwin/prc-tools is that everyone can do things their own way. If Aaron wants to use vi, he can. If you want to use an IDE, there are many IDEs built on top of gcc/make that work wonderfully.

Once you lock your development tools onto a particular IDE (such as VS.net, for instance) you limit your developers to using *only* that IDE. Well, surprise surprise, many devs in the world really don't like VS.net all that much, nor the OS it runs on. Many would like to be free to choose their own text editor. Many build software for more than one platform, and like the ability of plain-text makefiles to be very portable across development environments.

I know some people like to be told what to do, but there are also some who believe that freedom to choose is actually a good thing.

P.S. Of course, if you're wondering... my dev environment?

-- OS: Gentoo Linux
-- Editor: VIM
-- Makefiles? Written by hand -- it's so *not* difficult.

OK, OK, I do have a windows machine too (only so I can run the OS5+ simulators)... naturally, it has cygwin installed.. ;)
