How have you configured your connection in the Preferences on the Palm? You
need to make sure you have set a connection that is "USB/serial to PC" and
set the speed is to 4800bps in the Details of the Connection dialog.

Have you gone into the setup on your Garmin and configured the I/O output to
"NMEA OUT"? By default the new Garmins are outputing data in a proprietary
format so you have to change that to the NMEA 0183 protocol that the
O'Reilly app reads. Also check the baud rate for the GPS output. If you can
change the baud rate on the receiver make sure it matches what you have set
on the Palm.

While we're discussing baud rates, I have a question, too. Does anyone know
if setting a serial connection to a higher rate increases the drain on the
battery? If there is an appreciable tradeoff between speed and battery life
as I suspect there is I'd like to be taking this into account. Or perhaps
the main drain is just from having the serial port open.

hi,

does anyone ever try the GPS program of OReilly Palm OS Programming: The
Developer's Guide, 2nd Edition ?
(which can be downloaded from
http://www.calliopeinc.com/palmprog2/code.html
  (GPS of Chapter 13) )

when I run the program in my Palm (m505) and connected to the GPS (GARMIN),
no matter which port I choose, it always displays "No GPS!".
i have tried other programs which uses that GPS and the GPS has no problem.
does anyone know why and how to fix the problem?

thx!
