I remember someone making a palm / mouse digitizer for a PC (that's what you are doing, right?). Back then all pilots were battery driven and leaving the serial port open all the time would drain the batteries (i.e. project died). I can't find that program (why re-invent the wheel? - unless it's a class project or you want to learn something), but I found "Remote Commander 5.0" on palmgear.com. It might be what you are thinking about writing plus it also sports a virtual keyboard.
