Already been done. There are a number of different implementions. One is at www.olivetree.com. Under the covers, it gets really hairy to put a bible on a Palm.
Nah, not too bad once you get a reasonable compression and searching algorithm. I did it myself way back on a Palm III :-) The trick is having it be easy to use.
