Bug only on release simulators, why?

On the Tungsten/T and Zire 71, there's a bizarre bug in my program that 
looks like the program is getting "out of sync" with incoming serial 
data. The same code works fine on all 68K devices, and has for years.

I'm talking to custom serial hardware, basically plotting the stream of 
data from the external device. That means, alas, I can't debug on a 
real device, so I'm using the simulator and going through the PC serial 
port to my custom hardware.

This bug shows up on the release version of the simulator (I tried 5 
and 5.2), but refuses to show it's face on the debug simulator. I'm 
just *sure* that's an important clue, but I don't know enough about the 
differences in the ROM versions to know what it might be telling me. 
Any ideas?
