That approach would work perfectly fine - unless someone somehow entered a
valid character and saw the result, suddenly and horribly discovering the
cheap truth. ;)  Also, boxes look really crappy.  Dots (or stars even) look
much, much better.

Perhaps you could use a standard font that doesn't support standard
characters, such as one of the symbol fonts (like "symbol7Font") and all the
characters should appear as the default character, a rectangle.

Disclaimer:  I haven't tried this approach.  It is all theory.
