SndStreamCreate buffer sizes

Is there a list somewhere of the minimum and maximum buffer sizes for 
SndStreamCreate for various devices? I use these parameters:

    11025
    sndUInt8
    sndMono
so the buffer size is the same as the number of samples.
I request a size of 1024, but on Tungsten E, I seem to always get a 
minimum of 4096. At this sample rate, that's 0.37s which is quite a bit 
of latency.

So I'm wondering why it is so high on this device, and what the lower 
limit is for each device.
