well, back in the old pre 3.5 days - you only could store a 32bit value
as a feature - these days you can allocate a huge chunck. so the trick
you mentioned has been in use for a long time :)

it was actually a good trick to get globals in shared libraries and 
system patches :) will there be any more nostalgia today? :P
