5-Way Navigator Question

Hello,
   When I hold down one of the navigator buttons, I hear a clicking sound with a 
frequency of about 5 Hz.  Does this mean it sends out pulses at this rate or are these 
clicks just indicators that the botton is being depressed and that by holding down the 
button, as continuous signal is produced?   Thanks for your help,
