Dual-licensing a project is not uncommon. Perl has dual licensing, for
example (Artistic and GPL). Like another user mentioned above, GPL is very
clear and strict about code inclusion.

I would contact the author and suggest LGPL, which allows you to
incorporate the LGPL code into commercial applications without affecting
the commercial app.
