Oddly enough, noone's mentioned AsciiChart yet. (I was going to note
that last time I looked it crashed my Treo (i.e. it didn't like OS 5),
but I see that it's been updated recently, for the first time in four
years. Fantastic!)

The application you're looking for is McColors. Also PilRC comes with a
set of color palette bitmaps in PPM format, but presumably that's one of
the ones you're unable to read :-).
(Google knows where to find these two applications.)
