re: GPS apps

I am looking for more information on a smartphone (for e.g. Samsung i500, 
Samsung i600)  with an embedded GPS chip.  How can I programatically access the 
chip and get location infomation? 
Even if there is no GPS specific API is there a spec or protocol on accessing 
the comma separated text string?
