The interesting thing about all this is the T5 simulator claims to be running OS 5.4.5, but if I run the PalmSource OS 5.4 simulator instead (which claims to be running 5.4.0), the behavior is quite different: the alert simply appears flush at the bottom of the screen, even if the screen is taller than 320 pixels. That, and the alert auto-locks the button that allows resizing. This seems to work quite well.
My understanding is that PalmOne ported their DIA code from the T3 forward to the T5, rather than using PalmSource's code from the OS 5.4 release. That would explain the difference between the T5 and the PalmSource simulator in its behavior with the DIA.
