Here is a short summary of my idea's about the project and short planning. The goal of the project is to design an video player for Palm OS that is able to play DivX and Xvid encoded AVI's. At the moment there is 1 other player (MMPlayer - www.mmplayer.com) that is capable but it isn't free ($15) nor open source.
To reach this goal we have to do 3 major things: - Make an open source DivX/Xvid decoder library - Make an open source MP3 decoder library (Most AVI streams have MP3 encoded audio) - Make an player that can decode AVI's using the library's and display them smoothly on PDA's The most work in developing library's will be in finding out how the codecs work and how we can write a simple fast and reliable decoder for it. The writing of the player will have to be done by experienced palm programmers and also converting the decoder to palm C. Finding out how to make the decoders is something we all can do and consist of finding material on the subject on the internet. (I will try to get in contact with the Xvid developers for more information about that codec) Short time planning: -Put website online (I will take care fo this) -Make the development plan, wich codecs will be supported, what will we do first etc... -Start working! @ the moment we need the following: -Information about how to write a decoder for the Xvid/DivX codec->library -Information about how to write a decoder for the MP3 codec->library -More developers! This is just my idea of the project and if you do not agree tell me! Maybey it is also interesting to study the 2 open source DivX players for the PocketPC platform (BETAPlayer & PocketMVP). I hope to get the website online as soon as possible. (I'll make a Source Forge project off it, any objections?) And there is one last thing we need: A NAME! You got a striking name?
