I am aware that MP3 and DivX are licensed. (Xvid is indeed open source) But there are loads of decompressors for both and I haven't seen a problem with those. (Xvid is open source)
For example the open source DivX decoder ffdshow: "ffdshow is DirectShow and VFW codec for decoding/encoding many video and audio formats, including DivX and XviD movies using libavcodec, xvid and other opensourced libraries with a rich set of postprocessing filters." For MP3 there is the well known decoder MAD: "MAD is a high-quality fixed-point MPEG audio decoder with 24-bit output. The implementation is entirely new, based on the ISO/IEC standards, and performs especially well on systems without native floating-point support." But I am not aware of any license fee's these programs had to pay. Although the idea to make an Xvid/Ogg Vorbis player would be great to. When the forums are online we can discuss wich codecs we will try to implement first. But it would be great if we also could implement the DivX and Mp3 codec because these are the most common used codecs.
