Someone mentioned HotSync ID. That's what most people use, but sometimes that can be blank when the user has never performed a HotSync operation. What I do in this case is prompt the user to enter a name that I store in the preferences. Another alternative is to supply your user with a serial number that you generate and know is unique. A third alternative is to generate a random number.
