Hi you all, from what I know cingular still runs its Mobitex service in the US. The only thing that happened: PalmOne shut down their DNS servers and proxies for whatever reasons.
Well, they also stopped their Palm.Net business, which was the mechanism that Palm VII/VIIx/i705 users hooked into the Mobitex network. If you go back and look at the news from when that happened, you'll see that there was a change to eliminate unlimited Palm.net service back, people got outrageously high "this is what your bill would be" letters, and most of the users left the service. I expect that the billing changes were from Cingular's side, as they'd just integrated BellSouth Wireless Data, the operator of that network, but that made Palm.net unviable. Combine that with the rapid move to higher speed data on cell networks, and there wasn't much of a reason to keep a Mobitex-based service going.
(Note -- I don't know what went on -- when this all happened, I was at Metrowerks and just an observer)
