Update: I discovered that because I was using FldSetTextPtr to set the field contents and freeing the dynamic buffer (memHandleFree) afterwards (a little too anxious to avoid memory leaks) most of the field functions did not work properly (including FldGetScrollValues) and FldScrollField crashed.
