volRefNum has the value 1 (the same value is successfully used in another function calls) filename has the string "prfbkp.txt" (I tried using the full path of some directory but got the same error) fileP is NULL, but this is where the fileRef would be stored

In looking for the error, have you checked the contents of VFSFileOpen's three input parameters?

&file instead of fileP. You have to provide space for the FilePointer.
