Sounds like the very definition of "exit your application" to me. :-) Exit and return to where you were, instead of going somewhere else.
This is probably not always what you want.
You're right; sometimes you might want to do something else - like, switch to a different application. Then this is what you should do. It's just that I got the impression that the original poster was asking how to exit the current application.

can't you imagine the different ways your app will be called? It's not always the launcher. But, and now for you to understand it: The expected place to go when you hit exit or quit is the launcher. Do you agree? Then think again about your proposed solution.
