Many people do not want to HotSync, especially if they are
using a Treo and see their device as a phone above all else. A phone
user should be able to switch batteries and not lose their contacts. I would
venture to guess that the average Treo 650 user has not encountered many
applications that are incompatible. Even if they do, the relative importance
of keeping their contacts alive through a battery switch far outweighs
the inconvenience of an incompatible third party application.
I am sure NVFS, like other technologies, will improve in future
devices precisely because of the excellent feedback from developers who
have gone to the trouble to demonstrate the bugs and design flaws in the
current implementation.
As developers, we have every right to get pissed off about bugs
in the operating system. As business people, however, we have to ask
ourselves if producing (which could mean re-writing) the application is
worth it. If it is, then we have to suck it up and deal with these NVFS
bugs. If it isn't, then we need to pursue more profitable alternatives.
