I think the theory of NVFS-like feature was great and is a welcome improvement

developers could help test compatibility issues prior to publicly shipping
devices.

This was directly related with the development process -- PalmSource developed this functionality with palmOne as a professional services project, not as part of a major OS release. palmOne was beta-testing this with a limited set of software developers who were disclosed on the Treo 650 and Tungsten T5, and PalmSource couldn't beta this to developers because that would disclose the work to other licensees.

In talking with people at both companies, I think everyone recognizes that this didn't work well for developers. However, I don't have anything I can say with regard to avoiding this kind of problem in the future except that we're aware of what happened, and we will try to be smarter. What that means specifically I can't say at this time.
