As former VB user, you'd probalby get faster results when you try one of the Basic-dialects of Palm:
Handheld Basic ++
NS Basic
Appforge
HB++ combines the easyness of Basic with the speed of C. Maybe you can not do EVERYTHING you could do with CW or PODS, but you avoid the need to learn C.
