Thanks, folks. I ended up calling periodically EvtResetAutoOffTimer. Apparently, that works and is the easiest way to achieve what I want.
Anything more sophisticated, like trying to remember how much time has passed since I have started resetting the timer and whether it is long enough to go to sleep, or to remember whether I got the notification, etc. is just not worth the trouble.
