You absolutely don't need to wait for the batteries to drain.
You can do this right now:

1 Export from current PalmDesktop to csv (save files somewhere safe so the forthcoming uninstall does not delete them)
2 Uninstall current PalmDesktop
3 Install older PalmDesktop
4 Import from csv to PalmDesktop 5 Hard reset device
6 Sync

Sorry, but as he wrote, he can't do an hard reset anymore. The hard reset leads to the same Fatal Alert. So why should he reinstall its Palm Desktop? The device's RAM is trashed and unfortunately in the part which is executed on an hard reset. So he need to reset the palm to the virgin state. This only works with a power cut.
