I just saw on Yahoo news that Palmsource was bought by a Japanese company
called Access. What does this mean to the future of PalmSource and the Palm
OS? Is this a bad thing or a positive thing?
The link is:

Confirmed on PalmSource's web site (basically the same text):

I really don't know what to make of it either.
The most positive sign is this quote from the text:
Ed Colligan, Palm, Inc. president and chief executive officer
said, "Palm's award-winning user experience and application
expertise, combined with ACCESS' leading software development
capabilities, will allow us to continue to deliver great
products for our customers. ACCESS is currently a software
technology partner and we look forward to continuing our
strong working relationship to advance the Palm OSĀ® platform.
The most important part, in my opinion, are the words, "ACCESS is
currently a software technology partner". Which I assume means that
Palm wasn't taken by surprise and expects to have a positive
relationship with ACCESS, meaning they don't expect to totally lose
control of the platform.
Personally, I don't get why Palm didn't just buy back PalmSource already,
although one theory is that they were waiting for it to founder a bit
so its stock would drop and they could get it at a bargin.
I really wonder what this means for Cobalt. It could mean that it's
well and truly dead, or it could mean that ACCESS bought PalmSource
because they wanted Cobalt and plan to pump some life into it.
Or, I could be wrong about 100% of the above... :-)
