The only reason why you would tell the OS about the file extensions you app can handle is when you want to use HotSync to move them to the SD card. VFS-Functions work on the SD-Card as you would expect it from a normal File IO. You even can write wrappers to have a c-lib-like syntax (fopen, fclose etc.). You may have a look into the source codes of some newer ports (like myuae, duke3d, doom etc. at www.metaviewsoft.de)
