One option that provides cross platform capability is CASL - generally allows a write-it-once capability. They almost went belly up but were just bought by new owners who are enthusiastic about continuing to develop the language. It's a unique language, similar to basic or pascal, pro version converts to C then uses GCC to create a stand alone.
