The fact of the matter is that any range of only around 130 years does not necessarily make a good choice for arbitrary dates. Though it can work fine for things like database timestamps or the current time. AFAIK, the 1904 epoch was chosen by MAC simply because of the leap year issue. While 1900 was not a leap year (though divisible by 4),the year 2000 was, so by starting at 1904 then all years divisible by 4 will be leap years since the range runs out prior to 2100 which is also not a leap year.
