if i try opening the IR first, the IR will work just fine, but then when i try to open the serial i get error code 775 (serErrAlreadyOpen)
On many devices, the serial port and IR port use the same hardware ports, with the output lines switched between the serial port and the IR transceiver. On these devices, you can't use both at the same time.
