I guess I'll try and read the e-mail address from VersaMail, and if prefs can't be found, I'll require the user to type in an e-mail address the first time he uses the app.

That'd probably differs on each machine, depending on what MTA user use.
If you however would like to stick to VersaMail, you can always read
it preferences (assuming there's any defined on the unit -> I don't have
any for instance)
