Getting T|X into console mode

For the first time in a long time, I have a problem that I have to debug on 
an actual device instead of POSE or a Simulator. The problem is that I can't 
figure out how to get my new T|X into console mode. The instructions, and 
what I did on a much older device, are to enter shortcut-tap-tap-2 in the 
graffiti area. Of course, with graffiti-2, you only tap once to enter a dot, 
so I am doing shortcut-dot-2. The shortcut stroke echoes, as does the dot, 
but when I enter the "2", the whole shortcut disappears and nothing happens.

Any hints on how to get this to work?
