It may be cleaner to use a gadget since you are already doing your own
drawing.
You may be able to circumvent the original list item borders by
changing the clipping, but then you have to keep track of offsets.

the title of the page in the history to be displayed in the standard system
font and the URL to be displayed right underneath in a smaller font. So I

I do use custom drawing callbacks for the list.
