If you don't really care what the number is, so long as it is unique
to the device, you can look first for a serial number from ROM, next
for Bluetooth or WiFi device id, then phone IMEI or ESN, maybe an
embedded flash device serial number, and as a last resort, an assigned
id. If you prefix whatever you get with the source type (eg.
ROM,BT,IMEI,FLASH+<mfg>), you should have a reasonably unique device
id.

As others have mentioned, there are more ways. Just depends on how
reliable/secure/unique it needs to be, and to what extent you'll go to
achieve it.
