Another option looks like using either SysAppLaunch or SysUIAppSwitch to start up my application.
When I use SysAppLaunch I get the same error as I was getting before (issue with globals?). When I use SysUIAppSwitch I get a "systemmgr.c, Line:4902, Database left open: MyAppDB-;4.;" where MyAppDB is the name of my application and a4.; is my assigned unique ID.
