I believe (don't quote me) there's a difference between Graffiti 1 and 2
for entering the console mode shortcut. Graffiti 1 calls for a double
'.' to actually enter a '.', whereas Graffiti 2 just needs one.

A quick test just to be sure that your device is actually opening itself
into debug mode is to turn up your speakers and put the Palm into the
Note Pad app with a new note.

Enter 'l' (note that this is the cursive script l and not a block letter
l) and then . (or ..) and then 2. If the Palm understands, the l.2
should disappear and leave you with a blank note, and Windows should
play its annoying "USB device detected" chime.
I had quite a bit of frustration getting it to work initially, but my
problems were in getting the Palm into console mode proper.

This is explained in the manual that comes with CodeWarrior in the
"Debugging on the Device" section.
